LUMS hosted the prestigious South Asian Libraries Conference (SALC 2015) from October 12-13, 2015, which was inaugurated by Education Minister, Rana Mashood. Dr. Sohail Naqvi, Vice Chancellor, LUMS spoke at the opening ceremony and mentioned the importance of localized research and of "finding solutions for the South Asia region from within”.
The two day event titled ‘Journey through print to digital information and beyond’ featured presentations of academic papers, intellectual debates, discussions of think tanks, exhibitions and technology stalls. Vice Chancellors and Rectors of various Pakistani and Indian universities, librarians, government officials, educators, authors, publishers, digital content providers, and prominent people from civil society and media participated in the conference.
The conference provided a platform for all stakeholders to think, deliberate, share and formulate strategies to cope with challenges and opportunities of the digital world. “The aim is to identify problems and find solutions regarding new ways of knowledge dissemination,” said Dr. Ramzan, Director, Gad and Birgit Rausing Library, LUMS. The findings of the conference will be presented to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) urging for changes in legislation to accommodate the challenges of the digital world.
Dr. Ramzan, who is also the President of Pakistan Library Association (PLA) along with the Vice Chancellors and guests presented the findings of the conference at the closing ceremony. He assured of practical outcomes that would benefit future generations in South Asia.
