Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) MS Physics 2018 graduate, Hassan Ahmad Khan has published his research article titled, ‘Approximate photonic band gaps of dielectric-magnetic one-dimensional photonic crystals’ in a reputed science journal, OPTIK. Dr. Muhammad Faryad, Chair of the Physics department is co-author of the research.

Khan’s paper deals with the one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPCs) that have both the permittivity and permeability varying periodically along the same direction. He explains that these crystals are analysed theoretically using the coupled-mode theory. “The approximate band edge frequencies, centre frequencies, and the bandgaps are derived for the axial propagation. The results are an elegant generalisation of the corresponding results of the dielectric 1DPCs. The approximate band edge frequencies obtained were found to have good agreement with those obtained by the transfer matrix method,” elaborates Khan.

A publication by Elsevier, International Journal for Light and Electron Optics, or simply Optik is a scientific journal, which publishes articles on all subjects related to light and electron optics and offers a survey on the state of research and technical development within the various fields of Optics.
