Continuing its tradition of excellence, LUMS made history at the World Universities' Debating Championships 2019 (WUDC) held in Cape Town, South Africa, earlier this month. LUMS Undergraduates, Taha Iqbal and Talha Wani from the Debating and Recitation Society at LUMS (DRUMS), broke 12th on the English as a Second Language (ESL) category. This took their ranking to the 16th and 19th position respectively on the 'Best Speakers of the World' list for ESL. LUMS accumulated a total of 14 points and became the highest performing debate team in terms of total speaker points ever in the debating history of Pakistan.

The WUDC is the largest debate competition in the world and has grown to include over 400 teams from 250 universities and tertiary institutions representing over 90 countries. It is a moment of great pride that the team from LUMS not only held its own at a competition of this scale but also defeated teams from one of the oldest debating unions of the world such as Yale. The LUMS team came out as one of the top 20 ESL teams in the entire world.

It was an honour for LUMS to have represented Pakistan at a global stage and the exceptional performance by both Iqbal and Wani will be a source of encouragement for other talented debaters across the country.
