Dr. Muhammad Sabieh Anwar, Associate Professor, Physics Department, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) gave seminars on, “Physics For All: Using Experiments to Spice up the Student Experience” at Government Postgraduate College for Women, Wahdat Colony, Lahore and University of the Punjab, Lahore on November 26, 2018 and November 28, 2018 respectively.
In these talks, Dr. Anwar presented an overview of some exciting projects taken at the Physlab, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan. The idea is to use high speed cameras and motion sensors to capture physical phenomena, in particular kinematic problems. He demonstrated how techniques borrowed from image and video processing, some of them used in the entertainment industry, can be employed to track pendulums, springs, frictional motion, gyroscopes, and collisions. These techniques that we have developed in house allow to visualise basic questions in mechanics with astounding clarity. This can prove to be a vital tool for the physics teacher. He also presented interesting examples for studying nonlinear motion, such as vibrating strings, and magnetic pendulums. Examples were given of Perrin’s monumental work for tracking the Brownian motion of microparticles with a conventional microscope equipped with a camera.
Dr. Anwar also addressed an august gathering intellectuals, literati and connoisseurs of Allama Iqbal at the Dabistan-e-Iqbal, Gulberg on September 15, 2018. The title of his talk was کوانٹم فزکس کے دلچسپ مظاہر (Interesting Aspects of Quantum Physics). A pictorial gallery could be seen here.
