Dr. Muhammad Faryad, Assistant Professor and Chair, Physics Department at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), LUMS delivered a lecture titled, "Green Functions in Electromagnetism and Optics” on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology University of the Punjab, Lahore.
In his lecture, Dr. Faryad introduced the scalar and dyadic green functions in electromagnetics and optics. He shared that in in any linear system the input and the output are connected by means of a linear operator and when the input can be notionally represented by a function that is null valued everywhere except at a specific location in spacetime, the corresponding output is called the 'green function' in field theories. "The scalar and dyadic green functions are commonplace in electromagnetics and optics, because both the input and the output are functions of space and time," he elaborated.
Dr. Faryad also introduced a survey of the state-of-the-art knowledge of scalar and infinite-space dyadic green functions. The talk was attended by graduate students working in electromagnetics, advanced mathematics and optics.
Dr. Faryad did his Bachelors in Mathematics and Physics from the University of the Punjab in 2002. He went on to do both his MSc (2006) and MPhil (2008) degrees, in Electronics, from the Quaid-i-Azam University, and his PhD (2012) degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics from the Pennsylvania State University. He is a Section Editor of the International Journal of Light and Electron Optics (Optik). His current research interests include electromagnetics of complex mediums, surface electromagnetic waves, photonic crystals, and solar cells. Dr. Faryad has recently published a book titled, 'Infinite-Space Dyadic Green Functions in Electromagnetism,' (Morgan & Claypool Publishers, 2018).
