LUMS Daily Student (LDS), a premier journalism society, presents its flagship event, the Convention for Aspiring Reporters and Media Anchors (CARMA).

Date: January 17-20, 2018
Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Venue: LUMS

CARMA is a four-day international, journalism convention that seeks to clear perspectives on journalistic norms and offer new avenues to students all over the country to nurture their talents. It allows the participating youth to engage in a wide variety of exercises from all genres of media, whilst interacting with notable professionals, and equipping them with the requisite tools to strengthen their analytical and observational skills, thereby inculcating within them abilities such as brevity, clarity of speech, and appropriate structuring of written expression. In addition to the journalistic experience, CARMA is an ideal opportunity for students and delegates from around the country, to get a true taste of what it feels to be a part of the LUMS community, both as a resident and participant.

The theme for the 9th instalment of CARMA is ‘Global Media and Whistle-blowing: The Act of Uncovering and Bringing to Light Hidden, Illegal Activities that are Happening Under the Guise of a Legitimate Institution.’ From Edward Snowden’s leaks to the anonymous reveal of the Panama files, the effects and tremors of whistleblowing are felt far and wide. In such proceedings, there is no role as crucial as that of the journalist. With their words, journalists have the power to spread the truth far and wide. After all, it was the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists that brought the Panama Papers to international scrutiny, which brought down entire governments by generating mass protest. From the compelling investigations to the final reveal, join us at this year’s CARMA as we explore the different aspects of this global phenomenon.
